Kisuke Manaka is one of Japan’s most exciting modern blacksmiths. His path into bladesmithing wasn’t handed to him. After marrying into a fifth-generation blacksmithing family, he made the bold decision to become a bladesmith, despite having no master to guide him. With only an old workshop, inherited equipment, and relentless determination, he began teaching himself the craft from scratch. The road was anything but easy. Years of trial, failure, and relentless experimentation pushed him to overcome challenge after challenge. Through sheer persistence, Manaka-san accomplished what few bladesmiths can. mastering in-house forge welding, including the exceptionally difficult process of forge welding stainless steel. Never one to settle, Manaka-san made another bold move in 2025 by relocating to Sanjo City, Japan’s legendary knife-making hub. Immersed among some of the country’s finest craftsmen, he continues to refine his techniques, exchange ideas, and elevate his craft to new heights.
